I discovered My So-Called Life later on in my life but I still feel like in impacted me a lot, maybe even more than if I had first seen it in my teenage years. The Angela drama always brings back a wave of nostalgia as soon as I see her on screen. Plus, added bonus that the show was filmed in the 90's. Totally what I am feeling nowadays style wise . Never seen the show? It is a must watch for sure! Don't forget to don your best flimsy floral dress and oversize plaid shirt to watch it ;)

Hair Disaster: L'Oréal Healthy Look

Let me warn you, this is not a happy/glamorous post (as you can probably tell from the picture above).

In fact, as you can probably tell from my face in the picture above, I have been crying my eyes out for the last few hours.

You see, I've always considered my hair one of my best features, my pride and joy. It has always been a source of daily compliments and amazement. I considered my golden locks my best accessory and the simplest way to update my look in one easy step. I had also grown to love my given nickname, Goldy locks.

The source of pride was even greater when I mastered the at-home colouring. Never before had so many people asked for my colourist's name. I loved seeing people's reaction when I told them it was my own work. I have always been an advocate for at-home colouring but that was until tonight...

You see, lately I've been craving a darker shade of blonde, something along the lines of a dirty blonde. After thinking it over for a few days, I went over to Pharmaprix to pick up 3 boxes of L'Oréal Healthy Look in the nuance Dark Golden Blonde. BIG MISTAKE.

After putting on the product, I grew more and more concerned as the shade became darker and darker. By the time it was time to hop in the shower my whole head was a deep shade of dark brown...not even close to the original shade on the box. As I released the towel from my hair onto the floor, my heart sunk. My golden hair was gone and replaced by a strange shade of brown (not even light brown). At this point, I told myself that the new shade would get some getting used to but that I could deal with it. It was an unexpected change. However, the tears started flowing from my eyes as soon as I was done with my usual styling. I could see big spots of uneven washout blonde/dark, nothing that could pass as ombré (trust me, I tried to convince myself it could). Now, I need to book an appointment with my hairstylist asap!!

I think it will be a while until I experiment with new hair products again or I'll stick to my trusty Belle Color by Garnier or Perfect 10 by Clairol from now on.

I was never too inspired by Jennifer Lawrence all-American cheerleader look. However, after reading The Hunger Games and seeing Winter's Bone back to back I have to admit that I start seeing her look with fresh eyes and she surprisingly piqued my interest. Ok, you're going to tell me that by simply reading a book I couldn't have possibly changed my opinion on her style... not if I was picturing the movie trailer the entire time (I'm so freaking excited for the movie to come out!!!

Since then, I can't resist her doll face and plump features (doesn't she remind you of a prettier younger Renée Zellweger?). It's weird how much somebody can look completely different just by toning it down a bit. With Jennifer, less really is more. Sure, she's got a hell of a lot to learn when it comes to dressing herself IRL and even on the red carpet but the girl has an incredible amount raw of talent so she's all forgiven.

Here's to hoping she gets a good stylist...

Think of this as a style inspiration in the making...or simply a beauty inspiration :)

RBBMM x Le Grand Chemin

Sometimes, life gives you a break without you asking for it. The untimely death of my laptop's hard disk was the cause of my blog absence and my forced vacation. 2 whole weeks without any access to my emails, FB or twitter accounts...5 books later, I'm back and so ready for what the new year has to offer. First of, let's get back in the holiday magic so I can tell you all about one life changing night.

As fashion bloggers, most of us are blessed on a daily basis with generous gifts, extravagant events and out of this world encounters, so much so that I sometimes develop a sens of guilt over it. To celebrate the end of another wonderfully lavish year and the first anniversary of the RBBMM, all 24 members of the group decided it was time to give back. The plan: Spend a memorable evening getting to know the kids of Le Grand Chemin, a youth center for kids with problems of addiction.

The weeks prior were spend amassing presents for all the 19 kids. Let me tell you that I couldn't have been more pleased with the help, generosity and straight-up caring I was met with when contacting most PR agencies. It's nice to know that your voice, as a blogger, matters when it is really important and that the companies we often collaborate with are willing to jump at the chance to work on meaningful projects.

On the evening of the big event, my stomach was in knots and filled with a thousand butterflies. I was extremely nervous as I didn't know if the kids would really welcome us, if they would like their gifts or if they would even be willing to share some of their life stories with us. I'm so glad to report that my apprehension had no reason of being. That night, I met some of bravest most endearing guys and girls. Their will to get better and work on themselves was inspiring and their appreciation for the help they were given at the center didn't go unnoticed. It was easy to feel the love!

As they say, pictures speak louder than words... Please keep in mind that due to the fact that all of these kids are minors, we weren't able to capture their lovely smiles and excited faces as they were opening the gifts. You'll just have to take my word for it, they were beyond thrilled with what Santa brought them.

Afterreading Mode 34B’s blog post about the A magazine featuring lovely ElleFanning, I spent the remainder of the night browsing her Fashion Spot thread.It only took a few pages for me to realize that the girl’s style goes far beyondher young age (can you believe she isn’t even 15 yet?!). I finally found my very own version while shopping at Village des Valeurs last week. Ever since making it mine, it has become a constant companion, the perfect option when my apartment gets too chilly. I also love using it as a replacement for my white (that has pretty much turned greyish) robe so I don’t look like a fashion disaster even when I’m having a lazy day at home. The store offers some pretty decent quality jewellerythat is always on trend without ever breaking the bank. The necklaces above are some great examples of whyeverytime I go into Forever 21 I can’t come out without spending at least 50$on jewellery. As you’ve probably noticed, I have a real thing for Navajo inspiredanything so it is no surprise that I put these in my shopping basket as soon asI laid eyes on these.

Purple usedto be my favourite colour. Given the choice, I would always pick thisshade, whatever the variation of tone it was in. Dare I remind you that my oldroom (at my parent’s house) used to be this dark purple shade with leopard accents?LOL. As you can probably guess I pretty much overdosed on this colour afterspending 6 years between purple walls. Since then, I gave away every purpleitem I ever owned, I moved into an apartment where my bedroom walls arewhite and for the longest time, I swore I would never wear purple again. The picture above goes to show that you should never say never! Life can’talways be a purple rain (so bad…lol)!

I picked upthis nail polish while waiting in line at the dollar store. The great shadeselection and the incredibly low price made me curious enough to see if it would holdup quality wise. Along with this gorgeous lilac shade, I picked up a greatturquoise that looks a lot like Essie’s Turquoise & Caicos and a greatneutral taupe. After trying out each of the shade, I could have been morepleased with the result. The polish has staying power, absolutely no streaking anddoesn’t leave a stain on my nails after I take it off. At this price, the greatthing is that I won’t even feel guilty picking up some other shades.

The Holidayperiod is always my favourite time of the year to stock up on beauty productsand try out some new brands. With the gift giving frenzy, companies are comingout with the best limited edition holiday collection and gift sets full oftheir best selling products. I find it is the best way to try out something new without havingto shell out the full price.

A few weeksago, I was invited by the amazing girls at NKPR to preview Stila’s Holiday2011 collection. As a devoted Olsen twins fan, I was sold on the Stila Lip Glaze as soon as I read an interview in which they recommended the product backwhen they starred in Charlie’s Angel: Full Throttle! However, I have to admitthat I had never tried any other products from the brand. True, it has only been afew years since my interest in beauty products has somewhat surpassed the usualaffection to become a full on addiction. Still, I usually try to test out anyproduct that has built itself a cult following. I was so excited at the idea to finally get the change to try out other Stila cosmetics.

That night wasmy very first time hearing about Kitten, Stila’s top selling award winning eye shadow colour and I have to thank the alwayslovely and adorable Steph from Le Cheap C’est Chic for introducing me to a new favourite. I knew I had to make it mine as soon as I swarched it on my hand! The champagne colour is perfect on the whole lid for a pretty day time look or used as an highlight when sporting a smoky eye.

Part of the event’s activities included a fun blogger challenge in which wehad to create our very own shadow palette (as you can guess, the shade Kitten had to be part of mine!). The winning combination will be soldin Pharmaprix all across Quebec. What a fun challenge it was! Although quite hard with so many gorgeous shades to choose from. The main reason why most people watch the new WB serie Hart of Dixie is, without a doubt, to catch a glimpse of Rachel Bilson’s wardrobe. I, on the other hand, wait patiently every week to see what adorable dress Jaime King’s character will be wearing.

There’s no denying it, I’ve always had a thing for the southern belle aesthetic. Guess I can only blame my really girly side. It’s always trying to take over my extremely cool persona (LOL, yeah right…) and make me look bad. What I love most about Lemon (such a cute name it’s almost nauseating!) is that you always get a bit of a vintage vibe from her, no matter her choice of outfit.

IRL, Jaime King’s closet seems just as enviable as her on screen one. Like me, she tends to favour dresses or feminine pieces in delicate colours. To me, she’s always one to watch on the red carpet. I also find myself seaming a lot of inspiration from her beauty choices. She tends to change things up really often whether with colour or a pop of fuchsia on her lips. Sure, her success rate might not be 100 but I always appreciate a daring spirit.

Let me honest, it takes an incredible amount of courage toventure out into these territories even for an old time thrifter like me.Therefore, I really wouldn’t recommend the experience to someone that has neverbeen to this type of store before but really wants to try their hand atthrifting. Trust me; you’d get discouraged from ever doing it a second timearound.

20 minutesat the cash register later, these lovely items where mine along with a fewother designer goodies. It was a score, it was totally worth the hassle BUT itis definitely not something I would do every day…lol. Good thing these type ofevents only happen once every other week, this gives you the chance to forgetabout the craziness and get excited again. Oh what a good deal will do to me…

Whenever Iplan on attending a concert (which isn’t as often as I would like lately!), Ialways find asking What would Penny Lanewear? when picking out my outfit. Here is what my hands laded upon when itcame time to get dressed for the Mumford & Sons concert back in October. Onits own, the red velvet coat is a bit over-the-top yet somehow, with the simpleaddition of a mustard dress, everything gets a little toned-down. Did Iactually do a bit of colour blocking!? This post is great proof that you shouldnever say never (no, not talking about the Bieber movie here) when it comes totrend. Just do what feels right to you and you will end up radiatingconfidence.

Althoughthis outfit would never be considered timeless to the vast majority, Itis my classic look, the way I feel most me. Remember, in times of need, WWPLW?

Leandra might have coined the phrase but I was rocking the arm party even before The Men Repeller was even on the map. All I have to say about it is: THANK YOU GIRL! In the past, the first reaction I would get from strangers at the sight of my wrist adornements would lie somewhere between: 'You'll drown if you ever go swimming in these'' to ''Do you put those on every single morning?''. Nowaday, people seem malveled with my bracelet combination. Oh how fast time can change...

The most recent addition to my arm party is the kitchy cute Best Friend bracelet from Aldo (you can buy it here). Since my sister live out of the country for most of the year (she leaves on Friday, sniff, sniff), it is nice to have something to look down to every single day to help me think of her. Nothing like the bond of sisters!

Wednesday Manicure: Essie - Trophy Wife

I might be missing a husband but that doesn't mean my nails can't enjoy the perks of being a trophy wife! I got my newest Essie shade from a gift bag at the Little Burgundy Spring 2012 preview (more on that next week) and it has been gracing my fingers ever since.

Sure, its colour clashes with just about every outfit I wear but I love the dose of instant hapiness I get everytime I look down at my hands. However, I'm not so sure about its given name...it look much more like the tail of a marmaid than one of the cast member from Real Housewives of wherever. Don't you think?

Next, I'm dying to try a matte nudist pink. Any suggestions?

By the way, I'm not really sure which week I'm on but I haven't bitten my nails since that one sad day a few week ago... Still no luck kicking my habit of chipping my polish yet. Grrrr! Got any tricks, I'm pretty much willing to try anything at this point.

This girl has one of the sickest bodies I have ever seen, a face that radiates warmth and happiness and to top it all off, her style is the perfect mix of feminine and bohemian. Thanks to the help of stylish extraordinaire Rachel Zoe, Joy Bryant has cemented her place as a red carpet ‘’it’’ girl! What I love most about the girl is that she doesn’t look like she is starving for attention which is a really nice change from the usual Hollywood attitude. At the end of the summer, I discovered the show Parenthood in which she plays Jasmine. I have to say that I have enjoyed getting a weekly dose of Joy style especially since her character’s style aesthetic is so similar to her own. If you've never seen the show, It is a MUST!! So freaking good!

Maybe it’sbecause I’ve been told about 20 times that I resemble Kirsten Dunst since Ichopped off my bang (which I don’t see AT ALL but I do take as a compliment) orprobably because I’m dying to see Melancholia but I have rekindled my StyleMuse love affair with Kiki these past few weeks. She’s always been an actress Ilove watching on screen but with her break from the business these past fewyears, my interest in following her every fashion move had dwindled.

Lately, I’vebeen obsessed with seeing what her red carpet choices will be for the movie’smedia tour. Let’s be honest here, I’m already dying to see which dress she’sgoing to wear during award season. The thing I love most about Miss Dunst isthat her style is as fantastic for industry events as it is when she’s off theclock. A little early for boots suited for minus 20 temperaturesyou might say! I’d be the first to agree which is why this review has been sucha long time coming. For months, these babies have sat at the bottom of my shoecloset waiting desperately for the perfect moment to get out. Every morning,when picking out what to wear, I had to stare at them dreaming up outfits Icould wear them with. I fast came to the conclusion that the possibilities wereendless. Paired with a 90’s floral dress for a feminine touch or with a casualpair of skinny khakis, I knew that as soon as the weather cooled down I wouldreach for my Pillow Boots day after day.

After lastweek’s first snow fall, I finally felt it was appropriate to wear these aroundtown…and now, I’m in love. Sure, they are a bit massive on my size 10 feet butthey also look indeniably stylish. The perfect Canadiana staple. Anyways,winter is a time when comfort wins over fashion…but with these, you never haveto compromise style to keep your footsies warm. Yearslater, you could almost say that the apprentice has surpassed the master (well,I’m not quite ready to give up the title yet) and her crazy colourful style hasbecome a real source of inspiration to me. New Hair!!!I’ve wanted to try the heavy bangs forever and I finally took the plunge at theend of October. What can I say, I really was committed to my Halloween costume(what would Betty Cooper be without her girly fringe) and it was with the helpof Hugo at O Coiffure & Spa that I finally did the transformation. My straight-up fearof hairdressers (I would even dare to say phobia) vanished as soon as I was greetedby Hugo’s warm smile. I instinctively knew I was in good hands!

I wasreally surprised with how much I’ve been enjoying this new head of hair. Now,straightening my strands doesn’t seem so boring and experimenting with new hairstyles seems a lot more fun. Having the bangs has also influenced my dailyfashion choices. I seem to be reaching for far more daring styles and colours sincethe change. Metallic ethnic inspired jackets have somehow transformed intobasics. How fun!! Even my makeup routinehas been impacted by this simple snip of a scissor. My lips are now the focalpoint of my face and I’ve been having a lot of fun with bright, dark and corallips. Turning over a new leaf has never been so fun!

Oh dear friends, I have failed miserably…but I will not give up. It true, I wasn’t strong enough to resist the urge to bite off my nails. All I can do is blame the stress and hope for the best for the next few months!

These new Anna Sui babies will certainly help motivate me and bring me back on track. One day, my nails will be something dreams are made of…ok, this might be just a tiny bit over-the-top but what can I say, you always want what you can’t seem to have.

What I really love about these Anna Sui nail polishes is that they have this amazing rose water scent. Yes, it can become over powering sometimes but it always beats the chemical scent nail product usually have. I also love that these shades couldn’t be more opposition from one another. One is a disco queen’s dream and somehow reminds me of a galaxy and the second one is this most classic shade of neutral pink, can never go wrong with that!

A few weeks ago, I was invited to party the night away with my fellow RBBMM bloggers in celebration of the brand new Diesel fragrance called Loverdose. The diesel team welcomed us at l’Auberge Saint-Gabriel in Montreal’s Old Port for a night of heavy dancing in the perfect bizarre atmosphere. Some of the night’s highlights include the topless dancing bunny, the contortionist in bed and DJs extraordinaire Azari & III. The setting was perfect for a fun night on the town!

Now, let’s talk about the star of the night. Loverdose is a sensual and sexy oriental fragrance made out of a blend of black licorice, mandarine, jasmine, gardenia with notes of vanilla for a great warm, sweet kick. I have to be honest; I am not one for really sweet parfumes so I was on the fence when I first smelled Loverdose. However, I know enough about fragrance to know that the smell varies from person to the next depending on it's reaction to the skin and natural scent. After wearing it for a few days, I was very happy to realize that the flower notes where the ones that came out the most on my skin. It has become one of my go-to scents when I want to inject my style with a little dose of urban sensuous charm. From that point on, I'm only missing the lover ;)

I couldn’tpass up these last time I was doing promo in a Jean Coutu (which is a Quebecdrugstore chain, for those who don’t know) as they were only 2.99$ each. I’vealways loved those lip-glosses from Revlon because they are highly pigmentedand stay in place for quite a long time. I’m particularly in love with thecoral shade as is it the perfect mix with my MAC Mineralize Blush Duo in Light OverDark.

I woulddefinitely recommend that you check them out as they offer great colours and goon sale quite often! Beauty on the cheap is always a good thing when it comesto your wallet…now, your look, that’s another thing ;)

I have toadmit that it is getting harder minute by minute, day by day not to succumb tothe dark side and simply bite off all of my nails. I’m serious, I’m like anaddict! I feel like the only thing that could save me is a nail polish shoppingspree. Being excited to wear some new colours always helps to warn off the envyto return to my old habit. It’s not pretty, I know but neither are chipped nailor weird looking ones…and that is always when the temptation is at its highest.

This week Ichose one of my favourite shades, a dusty sorbet pink, to help me stay ontrack. I’m not sure how long this technique will work but I need all the help I can get!! Ilove this colour from Sally Hensen as it is perfect for any seasons and looksgood with just about anything, surprisingly! Plus, the polish goes on amazinglywell without any strikes or lumps. Honestly, I recommend you try the SallyHensen nail products as they are cheap and often work as well as the best ofthem…

I had neverheard of Felicity Jones until my blogger/friend Josiane from Ton Petit Look showed methe trailer for Like Crazy. Apart from being super thrilled to see the movieonce it finally comes out in theater, the simple fact of showing me the previewwas enough to ignite a desire to know more about the main actress. Yes, herface was familiar but I couldn’t quite pinpoint where I had seen her beforeuntil I did a little research/stalking on TFS. Doctor Who, Chérie and CemeteryJunction are among her previous stints on the small and big screen.

The girlcouldn’t get any prettier and her natural beauty is only enhanced by herdelicate features. What I love most about this newcomer, future It girl andstyle icon in the making: She’s got that Parisian flair for looking classic andstylish all at the same time, never overdone yet always on point. It’s not hardto imagine that she wakes up looking perfect.

It’s thattime of the year again, when everything is jolly and fun…and no, I am not talkingabout Christmas! It’s time to put on your best DIY costume (forget about allthat store bought crap!) and celebrate Halloween, my favourite holiday of themall.

This year,I was in charge of confecting not 1, not 2 but 8 Halloween costumes. Let’s justsay that with my free schedule I was begging for something fun to do apart fromsending resumes, which is what my live has consisted of for the last few weeks.My mission: create two sets of costumes, one for a millennium party where wedecided to go as the Spice Girls and one for a simple Halloween party where we went asthe Riverdale gang otherwise known as Archie and friends.

It was witha long list of necessities that I started my thrift store hunt. Surprisingly,the item I thought would be the hardest to find was the first one I crossed off my list.Orange pants are not an everyday occurrence so I couldn’t believe my luck whenI stumbled across a pair of skinny fit Jean-Paul Gaultier never worn orangepants for a mere 5.99$! Jackpot! After that, everything else was a piece of cake!

The final touchto our costumes was the comic strip bubbles which were the best conversationstarter ever! Let’s just say a hand full of profanities were written on thosetiny boards (might just be why I had to photoshop the first pic ;))

Takingchances in life always pays off, especially when it comes to thrifting. Both ofthe pieces I am wearing in this post are items I found at my local churchgarage sale. At 2$ each, they were definitely a bargain I couldn’t pass upwhich is why I had no problem taking the plunge and getting this over the topmermaid lace maxi skirt. Not something I was planning on wearing in my everydaylife! I wasn’t sure if the silhouette was quite right for me or if I would everhave the guts to wear it out of the house. As I often do when vintage huntingat community shops, I didn’t try any of the item on and simply hoped for thebest. Let’s just say I am not too fond of trying stuff on next to an old man oglingme and telling me I should definitely get it because it looks great in the buttarea (try story, I swear!). Plus, those kinds of places often don’t even havedecent changing rooms. So, I like to take chances and this part of the ritual(thrifting is my religion!) has somewhat become part of the fun. At thoseprices, I never feel too bad about taking the risk and bringing it home all thewhile wondering: Will it work or not?!

I’m so gladI took a chance on this skirt because it has now become one of my favourite. I’venow realized that the mermaid shade serves my body a lot better than any of themaxi counterpart. I’ve got a butt to balance out ;). Paired with a DIY croppedstriped shirt, the look becomes day time appropriate while still having behindmore intricate than a simple black skirt.

Lesson ofthe day: Take chances when it comes to style. It will pay off, more often thannot.

This week shade is called Copper Penny but somehow, I feel like the shade reads more like a rose gold. I've been really into metallics lately...on my nails or even when it comes to my choice of makeup. Golds, silvers and bronzes are just the perfect way to bring a bit of warmth to your face when the weather cools down.

By the way, buying the quick-dry polish from Sally Hensen was the best thing I ever did. 5$ very well spent on my part! I think I've changed my nail polish every 2 days since I purchased it.

One of my favourite new shows in the fall line-up has to be Revenge, a Gossip Girl-like story about a girl getting vengeance on Hampton’s high society for wrongfully accusing her dad of a crime he didn’t commit. Among the brilliant cast is British actress Ashley Madekwe a talented up-and-coming lady you’re sure to see on your screen for a really long time. She previously starred as Bambi in Showtime’s Secret Diary of a Call Girl and the defunct (so sad!) The Beautiful Life: TBL as ‘’It’’ model Marissa, two shows that were/are real eye candy when it comes to fashion!

Ashley is not only a style muse when it comes to her TV persona, her real life fashion choices are just as inspiring as her screen counterparts. This is the reason why I was so excited when I stumbled across her personal style blog called Ring my Bell (a reference to her ex co-star’s song!?). Yeah! You read right! A renowned actress with an actual real fashion blog including daily outfit pictures as well sneak peeks at her most recent purchases. What I love more than anything about the way she blogs is that you don’t feel she is any different than any other style bloggers…ok, maybe apart from some of the mentions about her day job ;). You can feel the love she has for fashion through every single post she write! Where she finds the time to do all of this…I have no idea but I certainly won’t complain!

Bryce Dallas Howard first captures my attention with her elfin look in the 2004 movie The Village. Every single time I see a picture of her, I have this sudden urge to dye my hair back to a rich shade of red…and every single time, I have to remind myself that I’ll probably regretting it when I don’t end up looking as perfect as she does. The girl has some amazing features, there’s no denying it but what truly amazes me is her red carpet style. She always looks fresh without being a trend whore and still manages to look good while being at the peak of her pregnancy…you’ve got to admire a girl that still puts in the effort when she is 8 months along!

The two last movies I saw at the theater starred the lovely Bryce first, as a neurotic southern bitch in The Help and secondly as a vain self-centered bitch in 50/50. If you still haven’t seen these movies, do yourself a favour and run to the nearest cinema. You will not regret it!

Yesterday,I told you all about the Calvin Klein store opening I went to a few days ago.Curious to see what I picked up with the gift certificate they sent me (bigthank you by the way!)? Well, here it goes.

It was sohard to pick up only one item (no paycheck = no shopping) but my choice landedon this adorable digital print blouse (doesn’t it remind you of television noise?)with a cute pussy bow. The classic shape makes it an amazing layering piece forday or night.

This timearound, I decided to pair it with one of my newest designer thrifting finds: aMax Mara trench coat! Its oversized and A-line shape is the perfect shape forfall layering. I can’t wait to pair it with chunky knits and cozy scarves. The funthing is that I know I’ll wear it for a really long time.

A week ago,I was invited to the opening of the very first Calvin Klein Store in Canada at MarchéCentral. I had heard so many great things about their dresses and the way theyfit any woman’s figure perfectly that my hopes about the merchandise werereally high. Worn by everyone from Diane Kruger to Ashley Olsen (do I even needto say how much I appreciate their respective style!?), Calvin Klein is a brandthat offers great wardrobe staples by reinventing classic pieces seasons afterseasons. While my personal wardrobe consists mostly of thrifting finds andvintage treasures, I’ve recently found a new love for investment pieces inluxurious fabrics. I like quantity and all but it is always nice to know that you’remost recent acquisition will last more than a year. To my delight, it wasexactly what I was surrounded with when I stepped into the brand new store. Mywish list grew with every single step I took. A trendy cape here, a casualparka there among the comfiest underwear and the perfect sheath dress, I lovethat the store is a one-stop shop to build an entire outfit. I couldn’t helpbut leave with a blouse…but you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see it!

What do you wear when meeting someone you admire, a lot? That was the question I was asking myself when packing to see Bright Eyes at Ottawa Folkfest. Finding the perfect outfit is always difficult. I know, pretty silly of me but what can I say, the right outfit always give me a lot more self-assurance and therefore making me feel confident! The perfect combination when you don’t want to get tongue tied at an unfortunate moment!

A shopping session with the little sis’ later, I had the perfect outfit courtesy of Suzy Shier’s sale section (can you see the theme here…I love myself a good deal!). Don’t laugh! This store has some real hidden gems when you take the time to look around! I knew I was looking for something flowy with an ethereal feel for that perfect feminine folksy look (well, my version of folk) and I found it in this tiered cherry red dress. Paired with my trusty pair of combat boots, the look got just the right amount of toughness. The perfect balance between romantic and edgy is always how I feel the most me.

After the sunset, just in time to see Bright Eyes play, I covered up with one of my newest thrifting find: a perfectly fitting cropped faux leather jacket (what a mouthful!). Last but not least, I completed the look with a childhood favourite: a flower crown! Think 27 is too old to play Anne of Green Gables? Think again! I’ll always be a kid at heart. That is why I never want to lose the excitement I feel when living a dream of mine, no matter how silly it might seem!

I’ve always been one to choose prints and colours over black. OK, maybe not bright colours but my heart usually falls for an array of neutral shades going from ballerina pink to military khakis. When shopping, my hands always seem to land on everything except for black, mainly because it is a) less eye-catching and b) for the simple fear of being boring. I’ve never considered myself classic and that is probably the reason why I don’t find myself lusting over little back dresses, THE wardrobe staple. As a result, my closet is seriously lacking in the layering prone dress department.

I’m proud to say that I have remedied to the situation when I was in Ottawa for Ottawa Folkfest. It was a race against the clock to find a replacement outfit just minutes before we had to be on-site for the festival! Mother Nature had decided to play a little trick on us bringing in unbearably humid weather when it was supposed to be 20 degrees max. Never again will I try to be a good girl and not overpack! I was stuck with a small travel bag full of jeans, long sleeves and combat boots simply because I was scared of looking high-maintenance if I packed any more. We were staying at Youth Hostel after all! The Joke was on me…

A quick trip to Urban Outfitters’ sale section and I had a completely new outfit for the concert. I first picked up this black Kimchi Blue dress out of simple despair. A quick trip to the changing rooms and I was head-over-heels! I had finally found THE dress for layering. The perfect mix between hobo and lingerie, I knew I would get a ton wear out of it! Not bad for a last minute outfit!

Funny fact: my sister and I had a good laugh when I changed from my dress into my pjs only to realize that the two were far too similar. What can I say, I have a thing for lingerie inspired clothes + overly girly sleepwear.

PS: The girl writing this right now couldn’t be happier! I’ve just learned that Mumford & Sons is playing Bell Center at the end of October. Already so excited!!

Second time around, completely different look! Here is what I wore upon our arrival in Ottawa to walk around the city/shop before going to Ottawa Folkfest. Yes! You are seeing right. This is the exact same lace dress I wore to Osheaga at the beginning of August. I was so thrilled when I noticed it had some buttons all the way down the front. The possibilities of ways to wear it being endless it was a no-brainer, it had to be mine! For a mere 1.99$ (yes, you read right!!), I knew my purchase would get a lot of use...because where is the fun in wearing something only one time!

You see, I’ve been questioning myself lately about the state of personal style blogs. The authenticity and freshness they all had in the beginning seems to have somehow vanished with the start of collaborations between brands and bloggers. Don’t get me wrong! I get why getting free clothes is amazing and understand it often acts as a substitute for a salary but where has the free-spirited way of cataloguing outfit gone? The first thing that made me fall in love with blogs and the bloggers that have inspired me to start my own blog is the fact that I could relate to them. That they, like me, tried to reproduce runway trends at a lesser cost was always one of the biggest draw. Part of the fun was always to see my favourite bloggers remixing part of their wardrobe into completely different outfits with the simple addition of a few accessories. The wonder of the style blogger birth was always that it was easier to identify with them than with any celebrities.

Before starting Modern.Antoinette. in 2009, I played with the idea of blogging for about 2 years all the while religiously following Fashion Toast. The first thing that drew me to these new style ‘’stars’’ was that they could make something out of nothing. With some old closet favourites, new thrifting find and a few investment pieces their closet looked like a carbon copy of mine: a miss mash of clothes to be worn a million different ways.

Somehow, in the last few years, this all seems to have taken a drastic turn. Every single one of my favourite style blogger is now wearing the latest designer good. Gifts or not, luxury is now a prevalent part of their look. The freshness is gone; it’s now all about the dream. Can I really blame them? Not really…It’s not like I would say no to Chanel, Dior or Givenchy sending me their latest bags. I mean, it is a fashion lover’s dream. What really bugs me however is the fact that they never seem to wear the same thing twice…how relatable is that!? I’ll be honest: I could probably wear something different every day for at least half a year. Thrifting is cheap and the amount of clothes I have accumulated over the years is shameful but at the same time, I have some favourites that I like to wear over and over again. Part of the fun with fashion is the way you can totally transform the feel of a piece depending on your moods. I miss seeing Rumy wear her floral dresses time after time and being able to achieve a different look every time.

I want to know, am I the only one feeling this way? Can to still relate to the various style blogger? Where to you steam the majority of your inspiration when looking at blogs?

Ottawa Folkfest Photo Diary - Day 1

Ottawa Folkfest - A Folker's Dream

Warped tour was my first love, Osheaga was a great fling but I think I might just have found a new lover! A week ago, I drove to the capital to attend Ottawa Folkfest at Hog’s Back Park. In its 18th year, a new life was brought to the festival when the production team behind Ottawa Bluesfest decided to give it a breath of fresh air and therefore saving it from an untimely death! Here are my impressions after attending the event for the very first time:

My first motivation for making the 2 hours trip the capital city was to a) See my favourite band, Bright Eyes, play for the 3rd time this year, b) for my sister to see her favourite band, City & Colour, play and c) to get a little pick-me-up from my post-Osheaga Blues. With nothing but high hopes and a lot of excitement we planned our Rock n’roll (euh…Folk) road trip to the land of hot guys and great music.

First reaction upon our arrival on site was pure and utter amazement. The stages were more than half the size of those at Osheaga! I mean, I couldn’t really complain after watching Bright Eyes from the stage in Montreal but this was the next best thing. We were in heaven! Another fun thing about Ottawa Folk fest is that the main stage is divided in two sections: one side of the stage is for people who want to dance and stand while the other is for the mellower crowd who like the comfort of their lawn chairs. No obstructed view problems here, everyone is happy! As for the second biggest stage, it lays at the bottom of a very small hill serving as a sort of down-sized amphitheatre. Picture this at sunset with the crowd scattered in the grass drink in hand. Once again, Heaven!

Ottawa Folkfest is a true folker’s paradise with its gorgeous scenery, laid-back vibe and unpretentious atmosphere. Imagine grass so green and clean that festivalers have no problem going barefoot (definitely not something I would do at Osheaga) and where unknown bands aren’t a nuisance but a celebrated part of the festival. Aspiring musicians can take part in workshops, jamming sessions or even try their hands at a new instrument at the Musical Zoo Tent.

Another highlight of the festival is definitely its effort to promote an eco-friendly way of enjoying music. Think FREE water in cardboard containers with multiple stations for FREE fill-up, amazing delicacies from food vendors served on plastics (reusable) platters and Cup Sucker bin for all of the heavy beer drinkers ;)

The festival has more of a summer camp/music school vibe than one of those music festival where everybody just wants to get trashed with their friends (ugh, ugh…Osheaga!). People are there mainly for the music, whether it is to discover new bands or simply see one of the many big-name acts playing the main stages. I’m already excited to find out who will be the headliners next year and I can’t wait to return to folker’s paradise.

My best moments from Ottawa Folkfest:

- Steve Poltz's crazy story telling often, including friend Jewel (yes, that one), and him playing ‘’ You were meant for me ’’...one of my favourite song ever.

- Bright Eyes inviting Tom Morello on stage and him joining in on ‘’Arienette’’

- City & Colour playing for longer than 25 minutes (their Osheaga set had been cut short due to time constraints)

- Eating a ridiculous amount of good food: tacos, cookies, chai lattes and beaver’s tail.

- Spotting Matt Costa enjoying Steve Poltz from the crowd and vise-versa.

- …
